The Katz Passover Haggadah

Baruch Chait et al, B & B Septimus, 2003

There are so many Haggadot (I have basically given up buying English-language ones) that is unusual to find a new one containing something really worth recommending. This Haggadah, subtitled ‘the art of faith and redemption contains the most stunning and inspiring pictures. Each page is a work of art, intended for all ages, illustrating textual, Midrashic and historic aspects of the Exodus story. The 10 plagues are of particular interest – each is given a picture of its own; when one looks at them closely, one finds impressive and sometimes unfamiliar detail. A look at the back of the book reveals detailed breakdowns of the pictures, with each nuance attributed to a Torah source. The author has ensured that the text remains readable, despite the pictorial detail; we have all encountered illustrated Haggadot that while beautiful, are also unreadable. The forward and background essays at the back of the book are excellent, making reference to secular historical, as well as Torah, material. The Haggadah also comes with a small booklet, offering the mandatory halachic guidance. A great complement to the Seder and good reading with the kids during Yom Tov. Clearly the Mitzvah of Haggadah is one of Mesorah, a passing on during the night of passing over. On this holiest of nights the future must seek the inspiration of the past; history must seek justification and fulfilment in destiny.
