This book, a recent acquisition, was recommended by a friend in the USA. It is an excellent and detailed presentation of the background and laws governing family purity and a range of associated topics. While there are many such books on the market, this is unusual in the quality of the background material supplied, which is extensive in the original Hebrew and translation with explanation. But the most remarkable aspect of it is the fact that the author is both an expert in the relevant Jewish laws and a doctor with a particular interest in women’s issues. As such, the text contains a mixture of Halachic and medical advise, scrutinising various subjects from a the vantage point of a doctor. Dr. Zimmerman also includes some most useful appendices on various gynaecological topics. These will be of interest to women in general, and provide useful background to the subject in general. Hardly a light read, especially for those not familiar with this area of Jewish law, but an important addition to the literature on the subject; sensitively written, from a profession and female perspective.
