Lisa Aiken, Aronson, 1996
Dr Aiken, a clinical psychologist in New York (now living in Israel) presents some thought-provoking material on some of the most difficult issues that human beings can face – dealing with loss and suffering. The first part of the book offers a sensitive Torah overview to the purpose of life and the types of suffering that one may encounter. This is followed by sections discussing most areas of distress and loss, including coping with terminal illness, the challenge of being single, emotional, fertility and financial problems and death and suicide. There is even a chapter on national loss and suffering, with a Holocaust focus. Each section is well-sourced and is followed by a short presentation of resources germane to the particular situation described. Although many of these are specifically American, the ideas are more universal. Dr Aiken’s style is appealing – it deals with immensely difficult issues in a sensitive manner. Her perspectives will not suit everyone, but I have found the book to be an excellent resource.
